Born in Alma, New York, on July 13, 1928, to Fred and Genevieve Billings Knox, Dick Knox was reared in a moral, hard-working musical family. At age 16 he came to understand the Gospel, and realizing that he was a sinner and that Christ was the only Savior, he trusted in Jesus as his personal Savior. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where the Lord led him into a ministry of evangelism. He met his wife, Martha Newland, while holding a series of evangelistic meetings in her home church in Kingsport, Tennessee. She was the pianist. They were married on June 25, 1955, and the Lord blessed their marriage with three children.

From 1958 to 1962 Dick was the program director at Gull Lake Bible Conference in Michigan and pastored Gull Lake Bible Church. In 1963 Dick and Martha and their young children went as missionaries to the Middle East, serving for 30 years in Lebanon and Cyprus. His ministry was varied: teaching Bible and music in schools, encouraging local churches, mentoring many young men, teaching trombone lessons, directing choirs, and assisting or directing summer camp ministries in both countries. He later planted a church in Nicosia, ministering to locals and people who had come to Cyprus from all over the world. After returning to the USA in 1993, Dick and Martha continued to represent their mission board, Biblical Ministries Worldwide, and to encourage believers to use their lives and talents for Christ. In 2004 Dick received an honorary doctorate from Bob Jones University.

Dick was a loving and faithful husband, father, and grandfather. Many words describe him: diligent, gracious, humble, warm, friendly, kind, and encouraging. He had a ready sense of humor, was full of the joy of the Lord, and loved his Lord and His Word. He was a bold witness and had a deep desire to see people come to know Christ and grow in grace. He was also a man of prayer who constantly interceded for his family and friends.

Dick is survived by son, John (Becky) Knox of Japan, and their four sons: Brian (Julie, and son Derrick), Andrew, Daniel, and Philip; daughter, Janice (Kevin) Buttram of Taylors, SC, and their four sons: Caleb, Jonathan, Peter, and Timothy; son, Steven (Ann) Knox of Vanderwagen, NM, and their two children: Matthew and Holly; sister, Louella Vincent of Canandaigua, NY; and brother, John (Norma) Knox of Grand Rapids, MI. He was preceded in death by Martha, his wife of 57 years, and a sister, Shirley Colley.
Dick’s memorial service was held at Hampton Park Baptist Church, Greenville, South Carolina, on December 16, 2014.

A private family burial was held at the Newland Cemetery in Arcadia, Tennessee on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Psalm 92:12-15
