Dr. Maier was the first speaker of "The Lutheran Hour" radio program when it aired on October 2, 1930. He continued as speaker until his sudden death in in 1950. A teacher at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis for eight years, he took a leave of absence to become the full-time Lutheran Hour speaker. During the twenty years that he served as speaker, he helped to spread the Gospel message around the world using the technology of broadcast radio.
