A burial place for Jonathon Augustus Reed (J.A. Reed) is not known. I am placing this memorial here where his sister
Josephine B. Smith and her husband who are buried in this cemetery in hopes that someone may know of J.A. Reed's actual burial location. If someone knows please let me know Rick Reed at [email protected]
Jonathon Augustus Reed is the son of Watson Reed and Penelope Rebecca Black and came to the Madison, Walker and Limestone and Freestone Counties after the civil War to be with his Reed brothers and sisters and related family members.
Jonathon Augustus Reed joined Company I 2nd Louisiana Infantry on August 6, 1861 at Camp Magruder. He is described as having Blue Eyes, Auburn hair, light complexion and a height of 5'9". He surrendered with Lee at Appamattox. He was one of seventeen in his company that originally started out as 120 men strong.
1866, April J.A.Reed and his brother Watson Reed put in a cotton crop in Walker County, Texas.
1868, Jan 1 is mentioned in oath given by J.S. Wills regarding land that he purchased in Freestone, County, TX
1870, July 20th J A Reed married Joannah Metcalf in Freestone County, Texas by F.C. McMillan MG circuit rider for the Methodist Episcopal Church South. After he married he went back to Madison County, Texas where his father and brother Watson were living for a couple of years.
From 1873 to 1879, J.A. Reed was living with his family in Freestone County, Texas and shows up paying taxes there.
There is a J A Reed listed as being taxed on a wagon and two horses and 1 poll tax in 1879. Sometime between paying these
taxes and the June 16, 1880 Wise County, Census J A Reed disappears or passed away, His widow went to live with her father Joseph Thomas Metcalf and remarried a man named Francis W. Reynolds. She shows up with 3 children Electra, Hattie and Arthur Gus Reed my grandfather. Arthur Gus was raised by his step father and lived as young man in Atlee, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. Arthur thought was born in Oklahoma but was not. He was born in Texas.
J A Reed's father and mother and a couple of his children migrated out to Eastland County, Texas about 1877 or so.
The fact that J A Reed paid taxes on a buggy and a horse and his poll tax suggests that he and his family were getting ready to follow his father and brother Watson out to Eastland. Some event happened in 1879 to J A Reed that took his life.
See, the 1880 US Census for Wise County, Texas where J A Reed's children are living with his wife Johanna (Joan)Metcalf living near her father Joseph T. Metcalf and also her remarriage to Francis W. Reynolds.
If anyone knows what happened to J A Reed or where he is buried please let me know Rick Reed at [email protected]
