Arlington, Texas- Mary Ahrens Powell, 89, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, in Arlington, Texas. She will be remembered in a private family memorial service.
Mary was born May 27, 1923, in Greensburg, to Frederick and Anna Ahrens. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and Kansas University. She married Richard A. Powell on Dec. 5, 1943, the same day he graduated from the Army Air Corps pilot training program.
After his discharge from the service, Dick continued to work as a pilot, moving his family to Lima, Peru, Kansas City, Mo., and Liberal, Kan., in the early years. In 1957, Texas became home to the Powells, where they spent many years in both Fort Worth and Waco.
Though Mary had moved to DFW area to be near family, she retained her membership at Central Christian Church in Waco. Mary had many interests. Among other things, she was an avid reader, traveler, cook, gardener and antique hunter. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dick Powell; her daughter, Janet Powell Adams; her brothers, Cecil and Wes Ahrens; and her sister, Fae Ahrens McWhirt.
She is survived by her son, Don Powell and wife, Terry; four grandchildren, Adam and Diane Powell, Shelley Langford, and Sarah Kennedy; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Jim Ahrens and wife Alberta; and several nieces and nephews.
