During the month of June the Battalion was participating in Operation CIMARRON in and around Con Thien and east towards Gio Linh in northern Quang Tri Province.
On June 29 the Marines engaged the NVA 2 kilometers northeast of Con Thien (Hill 158) near Route 605 in the vicinity of the village of Thon Huong Thanh. During a series of fire fights three Marines were killed in action and several were wounded. LCpl Gary Duvall was one of the casualties, he was killed in action by hostile sniper fire.

Ex-Countian Casualty Of Viet War
A former Lancaster Countian became the first casualty of war from Mount Dora, Fla., on June 29. Lance Cpl. Gary Duvall, son of Mrs. Floye Z. Smith, 1551 Sanford Road, Mount Dora, died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body. He was injured by rifle fire while participating in an operation against hostile forces in the vicinity of Quang Tri, Vietnam.
The 19-year-old Marine was born June 22, 1948, in Lancaster. The family lived at Willow Street and moved to Mount Dora in 1956.
Duvall's father, Ralph G. Duvall, was injured in World War II, and the move to Florida was on doctor's orders. The father was injured by shrapnel from a shell explosion in Italy and his death in 1959, was attributed to the war injury.
Gary enlisted in the Marines in August, 1966. He was shipped to Vietnam in February, 1967 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in June. He had just returned from rest and rehabilitation leave in Japan when the tragedy occurred.
Survivors in addition to his mother and stepfather, Tilman Smith, include three brothers, Steven; Donald and Paul; two sisters, Mrs. Carol Hall, Orlanda, Fla.; and Brenda K.; a half-brother, Thomas Smith and a half-sister, Tammy Smith"
