CHAPMAN — Jack Barton, 87, of Chapman died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, at Veteran’s Hospital in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. Delano Cunningham officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Chapman Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Mr. Barton was born April 25, 1927, in Royal, Neb., to Alfred and Agnes (Croghan) Barton. He attended country school near Bloomfield and high school in Center and Creighton. On June 12, 1945, Jack entered the United States Navy and served as a SeaBee in the South Pacific. While serving in the military, Jack completed his high school diploma. He was honorably discharged on July 19, 1946, and returned to Nebraska. On June 1, 1953, Jack and Merris Jean Eng were united in marriage in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Jack worked as an electrical power lineman from the late 1950s until 1964; the family lived in Aurora and Jack worked for Consumer’s Public Power Company. They purchased the Red Horse Service and Cafe in Chapman and owned and operated it from 1964 through 1976. Jack worked for Schmader Electric for nine years, and for several years they owned and operated the Ace Cafe in Chapman. During his semi-retirement years, Jack mowed for the Chapman Cemetery and helped during harvest.

Fishing, riding motorcycle, stock car races and road trips were some of Jack’s favorite pastimes. But his greatest love came from spending time with his family. He always looked forward to the daily “four o’clock social time” with his friends and family. Jack was a member of Central City Eagles Club, Aurora VFW and Grand Island Vets Club.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Cindy and Dwayne Wilson of Hinton, Okla.; Sherry and Nick Cladinos of Long Beach, Calif.; DeeDee and Montie Pirnie of Ainsworth; and Ross and Vickie Barton of Grand Island; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Merris, on July 26, 2005; a grandson, Patrick Wayne Wilson; three brothers, two sisters and two infant brothers.
