Sammy Dean Smith was born May 15, 1936 to R.E. and Mary Irene (Bowen) Smith in Gouldbusk, Texas.

At 6 years of age he moved with his family to Brownfield, Texas where they lived on a farm.
In 1958 Sam moved to Winters and married Eva Leta Wright. They then moved back to Brownfield where they lived until 1969 when they returned to Winters.
He worked for Winters Farm Equipment, Gene Wheat Oil Company and Runnels County Precinct 2 until retiring due to health reasons. He enjoyed fishing and wood work.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents and 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

He is survived by his wife Eva Leta of Winters. They were married for 56 years. Also surviving are 2 daughters: Marsha Smith of Winters and Carmela Polston of Winters. 1 son: Monty Smith of San Angelo. 1 grandson: Brendan Polston of Winters. 3 sisters: Inez Martin of Coleman, Carylon Boen of Spring and Jossie Grizzle of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
