Businessman, philanthropist. Affectionately and ceremoniously known as 'Sir Daniel', he was a founding trustee of the Dan Murphy Foundation named in honor of his father-in-law and was president for 40 years. He was widely known amongst Catholic charities and was instrumental in the construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, also the establishment of Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, the founding of the Patron of the Arts of the Vatican Museums and his philanthropy with the foundation to benefit the inner city Catholic high schools of the Archdiocese, programs serving the poor and works of the Roman Catholic Church universal. Because of Sir Daniel's beneficence to the Church, His Holiness Pope Paul VI conferred on him the title "Gentleman of His Holiness In Waiting", the highest award bestowed on a layman in the Catholic Church and of which there are only 147 worldwide-114 of these in Italy alone (as of 2009). As such he is considered to be a member of the Papal Household. He was a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Knight Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher and a Knight Commander of St. Gregory. Msgr. Francis J. Weber, archivist for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, who gave the eulogy at Sir Daniel's Mass said that "Sir Daniel has very likely channeled more funds to the Catholic church and its charitable works than any other single person in our nation's history".
