LA MESA -- Elaine Magdaline Kelley Bailey passed on peacefully in her sleep at home on Wednesday, November 26. She was 96. Elaine was born in Clarks, Nebraska on August 28, 1918. Her family moved to California four years later, and she grew up in Pacific Beach, Old Town and East San Diego. She attended Horace Mann Junior High and Hoover High before graduating from Point Loma High School in 1937. Elaine met her husband, George during World War II while working at Consolidated Vultee, later to be renamed Convair. They married in May 1944 and settled in La Mesa where they raised their two sons. In 1946, they bought Homeland Florist, a small business in La Mesa that they operated for eight years. In 1967, after her children had left home, Elaine began an 18-year career as a preschool secretary for the Cajon Valley School District at Naranca School. She said that she enjoyed every minute of it; she enjoyed telling stories about the little children.Elaine was active in the Alpha Iota chapter of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority where she held many offices and made many friends. In 1956, the family joined Vista La Mesa Christian Church, where she served as deaconess emeritus. Elaine shared George's values of civic responsibility and community service and supported his career in local government for over thirty years. Elaine is survived by her dedicated and loving husband George; two loving sons, Gary and Richard; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild. Elaine will be interred at Greenwood Memorial Park. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, December 13, at 2 p.m., at the Vista La Mesa Christian Church, 4210 Massachusetts Ave., La Mesa, CA 91941.
