Excerpt from "THE PARIS NEWS" on Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998: "In anticipation of her 90th birthday, Brown Dodson Coleman was honored by her family and many friends Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6, at Paris Golf and Country Club. As guests arrived, they viewed pictures portraying various facets of Mrs. Coleman's life. Ellen Coleman Terry, Mrs. Coleman's daughter, was mistress of ceremonies for a special tribute to 'Mama Brown,' which began with several toasts to the honoree who was crowned Queen for a Day. Dee Cochran, first cousin of Rodgers Coleman, Brown's second husband, remembered fondly how Mrs. Coleman always greeted her with a warm smile whenever she came to Paris. Becky Skinner reminisced about fun times she had growing up with Ellen and their group of friends, called 'the Nine,' and thanked Mrs. Coleman for being a 'second Mama.' Mike Blackburn, grandson of Mrs. Coleman, brought congratulations from Ira Blackburn, Mrs. Coleman's son and his wife, Jean. He said, 'Everyone should have a grandmama like my Mama Brown.' He thanked her for lasting memories of family holidays spent in Paris and at the farm in Emberson and said that he never minded the long trip from Amarillo. He added that he had always admired her grit which kept her going through several rough times. ^ ^Suzy Harper read a letter from Cynthia J. Beeman, director of Local History Programs for the Texas Historical Commission, with a very special 90th birthday message for Mrs. Coleman. 'We reviewed the historical marker file for the Lightfoot House in Paris and concur with you that a new historical marker with the title Lightfoot-Coleman House would be appropriate to officially recognize the role of Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers Coleman in the restoration and preservation of this important historic structure.' Mrs. Coleman responded with an original poem to express her love and appreciation for her family and friends, closing with the remark that 'age is a matter of attitude."
