Regimental History
(Nine Months)

One Hundred and Sixty-ninth Infantry. - Col., Lewis W.
Smith; Lieut.-Col., S. M. Wickersham; Maj., William Smyth. The 169th, a militia organization, was composed of four companies from Crawford Co., two from Mercer, two from Erie, one from Clarion and one from Butler. It was ganized at Pittsburg in Oct. and Nov. 1862, and there mustered into the U. S. service for a nine months term. Ordered to Washington on Dec. 1, it was sent to Fortress Monroe, thence to Gloucester Point and Fort Keyes, which it garrisoned until July 9, 1863, when it was ordered to Funkstown and became part of the 11th corps, Army of
the Potomac. On July 15, the command was ordered home and was mustered out at Harrisburg on the 27th.
