Sr. Audrey Marie Elfring, SND (Deborah Ann)

TOLEDO: In the early evening of Friday, November 28, Sister Audrey Marie Elfring, after a seven months battle with illness, gave back her soul to the Lord whom she had served so faithfully for forty years.

Born in 1955 into the home of Audrey Starrick and Robert Elfring, she became one of nine children. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated from Ross High School in Fremont, Ohio. However, feeling the call to religious life, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in August of 1973.

Sister Audrey Marie, as she was then known, attended Notre Dame College of Ohio from which she received her BA degree, and an MA degree from the University of Toledo. Later, she studied at Bowling Green State University and was subsequently certified in the care of children with Autism.

Sister was regarded as a highly proficient teacher of junior high students and was always a valued staff member. She was dedicated, organized, reliable and devoted to the children in her care. She kept not only a class list, but also a group picture of each class she had ever taught.

For thirty-four years she served on the faculties of the following schools: St. Paul, Norwalk; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; Immaculate Conception, Bellevue; St. Joseph, Maumee; St. Joseph, Monroeville; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Carmel, IN; Holy Rosary, Jacksonville, FL; St. Joseph, Erie, MI; and St. Ann - St. Martin dePorres, Sacred Heart, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Charles, St. Hyacinth, St. Teresa, and Mary Immaculate Schools in Toledo. She was highly regarded as a teacher, a mentor and a friend.

Preceding her in death are her parents and sisters, Karen and Sharon.

Left to mourn her passing are her sister, Barbara Elfring and her brothers, Christopher, Michael (Kelly), Paul (Kim) all of Clyde, OH, James, Fremont, David, Midland, MI; her friends and her Notre Dame sisters.

Visitation will be at the Notre Dame Provincial Center at 3837 Secor Road, Toledo on Wednesday, December 3 from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Sharing of Memories at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 4 in the Provincial Center Chapel followed by the burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Urbanski Funeral Home.

Any tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame.
