On December 21, 1918, Walter Everet Blaskowsky was born in Gackle, North Dakota. He grew up on a family homestead in the German/Russian town, and until he entered school at age eight, he spoke primarily German. His education took place in a real, old-fashioned, one-room schoolhouse, and Walt excelled as student. So much so that when he graduated from high school he was offered a full scholarship to Jamestown University. But it was the depression and although his schooling would have been free, there was no money for room and board. So he was forced to decline. Instead, he remained in Gackle and taught school in a room with students as young as first grade and as old as eighth. And he did so until the family farm failed, an event that uprooted them and moved them to Olympia, Washington to start over. He then spent a year in Juno, Alaska working as a sales clerk. When he came back to Seattle, he met Ruth Johnson, a beautiful young women at a church young people's convention. After saving her life when a friend's car ran off the road, she decided he was the one for her. They married August 8, 1942.

Walt and Ruth Blaskowsky eventually settled in South Seattle where they built their home and raised their three daughters.Walt's creative energy was played out in his love of landscaping. Their backyard was, as it lives in the minds of many who say it, a Garden of Eden. Some of his grandchildren took a few of their first steps in that yard, picked its blueberries, and waded in its fountain. The yard was home to lazy afternoons of lawn-darts, picnics, and, most of all, family.During those earlier years he worked as a machinist. He enjoyed working with his hands and took pride in those things he created. He retired formally in 1981, but continued with his own business for seven years.Walt and Ruth sold the house in 1990 and traveled for a few years. They finally settled in Arlington, Washington where they lived in a comfortable apartment connected to their youngest daughter's home. There he lived out the rest of his life building and landscaping and creating beauty wherever beauty could be.Walt and Ruth celebrated their 63rd anniversary on August 8th, 2005! He will be truly missed.
