Army Spc. Wise was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment, 53rd Infantry Brigade, Florida National Guard, Tallahassee, Florida. Wise was on a mounted patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded. Robert attended Gerald Adams Elementary School and Horace O'Bryant Middle School. During his time in Key West, he played city league T-ball, baseball, basketball, soccer, cross-country track and was equipment manager for the women's volleyball teams. In each of his three years in middle school, he was a performer with the Horace O'Bryant Middle School Circus of the Kids. He moved to Tallahassee with his mom in June 1996, when his parents separated. He became very active in the Air Force JROTC program at Godby High School during his freshman year. Robert was a member of the drill team during his time in JROTC, attended summer programs at Camp Blanding and attained the rank of cadet colonel during his senior year. He was the Cadet Corps commander of the program at the time of his graduation in May 2000. He was the person who would show up one hour early and stay three hours late to do whatever needed to be done. He had to get his mother's signature to join the Florida National Guard when he was 17, shortly before his graduation from Godby and began his basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., in August 2000. He graduated basic training in December 2000, returning to Tallahassee. While serving in the Florida Army National Guard, he was employed locally by Graybar Electric Co. Robert's letters to his mom showed his strong spirit and sense of humor - "When the wind is blowing really strong, [sand] fills the tents, but when the wind stops, all the air rushes out of the tent and causes the sand to literally explode into the air, and covers everything in a fine coat of dust. Yeah! Every morning I wake up, and it's like a scene out of The Mummy." He also told his mom if anything major happened, she would be the last to know; he didn't want her worrying about him. Robert will be remembered for his love of life, his infectious smile and his warmth. His parents, Tammy and David Wise, were presented with the U.S. flag that covered his casket, his Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

NOTE: On April 13, 2008 Robert was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
