Drew Barrymore's estranged half-sister Jessica Barrymore was reportedly found dead in her car Tuesday on the 900 block of Hoover Avenue in National City, CA. San Diego in a suspected suicide.

According to Ms. Barrymore’s FB she attended San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. She worked at a PetCo in San Diego.

Jessica Barrymore's brother John Barrymore likened her death to that of 'Batman Begins' actor Heath Ledger, who overdosed on prescription pills in his Soho loft. Jessica Barrymore was found in her car with vodka, meth and dozens of white pills scattered around, authorities and family said.

Jessica Barrymore, who would have turned 48 on Thursday, was discovered inside a Toyota Camry parked in front of a driveway near San Diego, a SoBe energy drink between her legs and dozens of pills sprinkled across the passenger seat, according to the National City resident who found her.
Marta Lopez was leaving for work when she saw the car blocking her driveway.
Oscar Sandoval (from left) and mom Martha Lopez found Jessica Barrymore dead in a car parked in their driveway in National City, Calif.

The woman inside was reclined in her seat, unconscious, Lopez told ABC affiliate 10News.
“Are you OK? You need some help,” Lopez called out.
There was no response, and Lopez dialed cops. Responding officers found Barrymore in the front seat, her body cold to the touch and fatally touched by the substance abuse problems that have plagued her family for generations.

Her brother John Barrymore said it was likely an accidental overdose.
“It looks like it was a drug misadventure. Mixing alcohol and pills. I seriously doubt she took her own life,” John Barrymore, 60, told the Daily News.
“There were some empty vodka bottles, a couple bags of meth and a variety of pills in the car. My guess is that it was the booze and pills, like with Heath Ledger,” he said, referring to the popular Australian actor who overdosed on prescription pills in a SoHo loft in 2008.
Hours after the news of Jessica Barrymore’s death, half-sister Drew Barrymore — who has had her own battles with alcoholism and drug abuse — released a statement.
“Although I only met her briefly, I wish her and her loved ones as much peace as possible and I’m so incredibly sorry for their loss,” the actress said in a statement to The News.
John Barrymore said it was true the half-siblings barely knew each other. The three of them met once to scatter the ashes of their actor father, he said.
The sisters met on one other occasion right before their father, who had four kids from several marriages, died.
“I don’t blame (Drew) for being terrified of anyone she’s related to. Her parents were pretty toxic,” John Barrymore said.
The father, John Drew Barrymore, who died in 2004, ended his days as a mentally ill recluse. His father, the legendary Broadway and Hollywood star John Barrymore, was a notorious drinker whose death was brought on by alcoholism. The family included many other celebrated actors — most notably Ethel and Lionel Barrymore. Yet matching the family’s great talent has been its great struggle with hard and fast living.
In her memoir, “Little Girl Lost,” Drew Barrymore said she was drinking at age 9, doing drugs not long after, and had tried to commit suicide in her early teens. Now married and a mom, she appears to have conquered the family demons
Jessica Barrymore’s brother said she was normally an upbeat personality who’d been struggling with the ill health of her mother, Nina Wayne, John Drew Barrymore’s third wife.
“She visited her mom the day before, and her mom is almost gone. It was hard for her to see her. I doubt she tried to kill herself, though . . . I predict it will be that — mixing booze and pills and taking too many,” John Barrymore said.
“I’m going to miss Jessica. She was a kindred spirit. She knew laughing is what saves us all,” he said.
Drew Barrymore, the 39-year-old “Charlie’s Angels” and “E.T.” star, and her half-sibling lived starkly different lives.
While the actress was making millions by starring in movies with Adam Sandler and Cameron Diaz and buying posh homes in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara, her half-sister stumbled through life, working at a suburban Petco and racking up a drug arrest.
“She appeared to be sleeping in her vehicle,” National City Lt. Robert Rounds told The News.
Rounds said officers seized the car and “all its contents” pending a cause of death to be determined by the San Diego County medical examiner. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

She was the daughter born in 1966 to his third wife Nina Wayne, 70, the former actress who appeared in the romantic comedy Luv alongside Jack Lemmon.

Facing her own problems with her family, Jessica moved in with her surrogate mother Dorothy Steinbeck at her home in Escondido, California. Jessica moved into Dorothy's CA home, when she was 15 years of age. She stayed there until she was 18 but was asked to leave when she began using meth.
In recent weeks relatives said that they feared Jessica was using it once again after eight years of sobriety.

They also worried that she had been heavily drinking vodka.

In an interview with MailOnline Mrs Steinbeck said: ‘It's hard to wrap my head around this, that she may have done this on purpose.

‘I don't believe it. She talked about recapturing her youth. She lost a lot of weight and she was very pleased about that.

‘We were very worried because she was losing weight by drinking these energy drinks a lot to excess.

‘She was having problems and got in a big contentious fight with the man she was seeing last week. But I’m thinking that wasn’t what pushed her over the edge. Jessica has a tendency to smother potential suitors and she was doing it again.

‘This is so hard. For years and years we struggled with her and finally she got sober and then she got on those drinks and it was a freight train’.

It seems that in her youth Jessica, like Drew, harbored dreams of being an actress and attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.

But before Jessica even left the high school, Drew, now 39, was already more of a star than her sister could ever be.

At the age of seven Drew appeared in ET and made the transition to adult actress in movies like Poison Ivy and Bad Girls.

It’s hard to imagine that there wasn’t a degree of competition from two girls from the same family trying to make it in the same industry.

And not all of it was healthy.

A close family friend said: ‘The self-esteem and body issues started when Jessica was very young.

‘Her father John, who was very messed up himself, showed Drew a picture of Jessica and Drew said: ‘How could I possibly be related to someone who is so fat?'

‘She was just a kid but then John went and told Jessica and that hurt her dearly. John was not kind in that way. Jessica's relationship with her dad was contentious.’

Tragically Jessica’s career was over before it began because her stepfather David Wheeler banned her from doing an advertisement for Gerber baby food when she was a child - exactly how Drew started off in show business.

Mrs Steinbeck said that that he told her: ‘Absolutely not. I don’t want Hollywood to exploit her’.

She said: ‘But you see, Jessica could have had the same opportunities as Drew, perhaps. But David would not let her flourish. It was a terrible mistake. I'm sure it was.

‘Things happened to Jessica that were very sad. It's time people know.

‘She was in a lot of pain. She had terrible body image issues and suffered enormously from lack of self esteem. She felt abandoned.’.

By 1996, the two sisters were on very different path.

Only a year after Drew appeared in Batman Forever in one of her most high profile roles, public records show that Jessica admitted drug trafficking at a court in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She also faced charges of conspiracy to commit a criminal act, possession of drug paraphernalia and falsely obtaining services.

Mrs Steinbeck said that Jessica always felt torn about her relationship with her more famous sibling.

She did not want to to seem like she was bothering her because of her fame but at the same time appears to have wanted a more profound connection.

And Drew could have done more to reach out too.

Mrs Steinbeck said: ‘I just always felt that it was kind of strange that she just completely rejected all of her siblings.

‘Do you know there was not one blood relative at her wedding?

‘Not even her mother. I get that to a certain degree.

‘She felt and she'd said this before that her family saw her as a meal ticket, and that she had been exploited to a large degree and I believe that estrangement is why her mother wasn't there at her wedding.

‘We always used to laugh when she said she had no family: What are you talking about, girl?

‘You have lots of family that you won't have anything to do with. Jessica never tried to contact Drew even once.

‘Anyway, Jessica wanted to be overly careful that Drew didn't think she was being used or that she wanted something from her. She didn't even want to approach Drew until she was feeling good about herself and not until then.’

Mrs Steinbeck described Jessica as a ‘gracious’ and ‘loving person’ but she admitted that she ‘didn’t realize she was in so much pain’.

She said: ‘She always felt like she wasn't good enough.

‘When she was 18, she moved to LA and got her own telephone on her own, and she got so many calls from people wanting to talk about Drew that she disconnected the phone.

‘It was so painful to her because she never bothered or approached Drew ever. She didn't want to be perceived as wanting something. Imagine that.

‘Drew is her sister but Jessica wanted to wait until she was in a good place and then maybe then. She hoped to feel good enough to approach Drew but she never did. And Drew never reached out, of course.

‘They saw each other only twice in decades, one at the hospice and one when they dropped John's ashes.’

Jessica had been married but was divorced and moved back in with Mrs Steinbeck. More recently she had been living in a rented apartment with a roommate.

She had also been using the vitamin B12 injections, which have been championed by Madonna, Lindsay Lohan and Victoria Beckham, who used them when she was pregnant.

Family friend Arlene August, who was best friends with Nina, Jessica’s mother, said that pictures posted on Facebook showed just how much Jessica had slimmed down.

She said: ‘I know that Jessica was trying to lose weight.

‘She was seeing a doctor to get B12 injections. She was trying to lose weight in a healthy way. She did lose a lot of weight.

‘She was about 300lbs and in the last week or so everybody was asking what her secret was.’

Vitamin B12 injections are not scientifically proven to help with weight loss, but those who use them say they give you more energy and speed up your metabolism and help you digest food more quickly.

The side effects can cause stomach problems and nausea but in rare cases they can cause heart problems such as palpitations, chest pain and problems breathing.

Arlene said: ‘Jessica was trying to get her life back to something positive. She was losing weight, she was looking great, she looked fantastic.

‘Nina was really shocked when she saw Jessica. Nina kept telling me: ‘She so skinny, she’s so skinny’. My first thought was that she had an eating disorder.

‘It (her death) could have been a combination of everything. Losing weight that quickly meant she wasn’t getting enough protein and her heart wasn’t getting enough nourishment.

'Her car was parked in somebody’s driveway and she could have had a heart attack’.

Jessica’s final days seem to have been spent with loved ones and with no sign anything was wrong.

Over the weekend she visited her cousin Alex in the California desert and on Monday met with Arlene and then her mother at the nursing home where she lives in Palm Springs, California, where she is being looked after as she is paralysed from the waist down.

Nina gave her a photo album of their years together as a birthday present - had she lived, Jessica would have celebrated the occasion today.

Arlene said Jessica was an animal lover and worked at Petco for the last 11 years where she would give the birds nicknames like Pumpkin.

She had a cat called Cougar for the last 10 years and had just adopted another one. Friends remembered her as a great cook whose speciality was baked brie.

Describing Jessica as ‘sweet’ and ‘humble’, Arlene said: ‘My heart can't hold the pain and I wake to my eyes flowing with tears that are burning my face.

‘She was such a wonderfully kind hearted person.

‘She was always grateful for everything I did for her mother.

‘There was no sign that she was troubled. She seemed to be in good spirits on Monday. She was really happy to be in the desert visiting her cousin.

‘She was a deep thinker. Always leaving kind statements (on Facebook) of how to approach life.’

Mrs Steinbeck said that her son Greg stopped by to see Jessica on Monday and found her ‘very agitated’.

She said: ‘She invited him in and wanted to fix him and meal and then she said she had to leave.

‘She hugged him for all she was worth and apologize and Greg left.

‘Then her roommate said she left that night at about 8pm but she tried to get her to calm down and stay but she didn’t know what to do with herself.

‘Then the next thing we heard was that the Medical Examiner’s office was trying to find a blood relative. Tony (her cousin) was asked to identify the body and that was a dead giveaway that is was Jessica.’

So far Drew has only released a one line statement on the loss of her eldesr sister.

It read: ‘Although I only met her briefly, I wish her and her loved ones as much peace as possible and I'm so incredibly sorry for their loss,"

But so far that does not seem enough satisfy Mrs Steinbeck, who feels she should do more.

She said: ‘That was brief. How generic. The only time Drew reached out was during her father's death’.

Drew Barrymore has released a statement following the shock death of her half-sister, Jessica Barrymore, who was found dead in her car on Tuesday (29 July) days before her 48th birthday.

Jessica was the daughter of actor John Barrymore and his third wife Nina Wayne. John was estranged from daughter Drew Barrymore for many years before he passed away after suffering from cancer in 2004.

Drew, who was not a close relation, issued the following reaction to the news: "Although I only met her briefly, I wish her and her loved ones as much peace as possible. I'm so incredibly sorry for their loss."

Jessica was found surrounded by ''dozens of white pills" as she lay slumped behind the wheel of the vehicle, which was blocking the driveway of an apartment block in San Diego.

According to local station 10News, her body was discovered at 6am by residents who were trying to leave for work.

The Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed Jessica Barrymore’s identity to the station, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine her cause of death.

Her last message, posted via her Facebook account, was a post from Mystera Magazine.

It read: "Life doesn't always introduce you to the people you want to meet.

"Sometimes, life puts you in touch with the people you need to meet to Help You, to Hurt You, to Guide You, to Leave You, to Love You, and to gradually Strengthen You into the Person You Were Meant to Become.[sic]"

Jessica had a history of drug and alcohol addiction and was admitted to a rehabilitation programme twice during her teens.
