The eldest son of Joseph Willett Spooner and Mary Louisa Powers, Charles had two brothers - William Thompson Powers Spooner (1883-1908) and Harold Laurence Spooner (1886-1948)and one sister - Louisa Carlotta Spooner (1891-1971). A graduate of the University of Michigan, he became a successful architect in Chicago. He married Emily Ambler Clark (1896-1968), and with her had two sons - Charles Willett Spooner (1911-1993) and John Clark Spooner (1917-1997) - and two daughters - Mary Powers Spooner (1913-1995) and Helen Fuller Spooner. Charles became quite wealthy, but lost everything during the Depression. He regrouped, and re-established his business, but later in life the loss of his eyesight forced him to retire. The stable he built in Leland Michigan for his daughter's horse, later converted into a summer cottage, is still in the Spooner family three generations later.
