Samuel Robinson enlisted in the CSA 2nd SC Rifles on 22 Oct 1861. This unit was assigned to the Orr’s Regiment until Dec 1861. He gave his age as 22 years [equals b. 1839]. This is in conflict to the 1850 and 1860 Census Records where his age would have been about 17. While there was no minimum age to enlist, there were incentives to state an older age. Those less than 18 years tended to be assigned to state Militias and support duties such as litter carriers for the dead and wounded. Samuel is listed in his Military File as “Died at Abbeville SC Nov 23, 1864”. He had been in various hospitals in Virginia and Tennessee with Chronic Dysentery and was home on furlough with this illness. He is probably buried in the Duncan Cemetery in Abbeville County SC.
