In Memory of Margaret Fordyce

Margaret A. Long Fordyce was born in Blount Co., Tenn., June 24, 1811, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rue Bowdle, in Piqua, Sept. 9, 1889, aged 78 years, 2 months and 15 days.

When she was quite young her father emigrated to Ohio which was quite sparsely settled. He located near Cincinnati, owning as his farm, what is now known as the beautiful Cemetery of Spring Grove. He resided there but a few years when he came with his family to Miami County, it being considered very unhealthy where he was living. In this county Mrs. Fordyce had ever since resided with the exception of a few years, when her husband lived at New Carlisle having charge of the school.

She was united in marriage with Uriah Fordyce, March 17, 1829, to which union were born ten children, only three of whom are living, seven and the husband having preceded her. She used to say, "the family is larger on the other side than here," and now it is increased again. She leaves three children and but three grandchildren out of so large a family to mourn her loss. Two brothers and one sister survive her.

In early life she united with the Baptist Church at Staunton in this county. After coming to Piqua she united with the 2d Presbyterian Church and had been a faithful, consistent christian. She had not been able to go to the house of God for many years, but her faith in Christ had grown stronger and stronger from day to day in the midst of the most intense and acute sufferings. She had been a sufferer for more than 20 years. The last four years the writer has known her intimately, and it is accurate to say that she endured pain every day in all those years, and most of the time it has been most excruciating, and yet who ever heard Mother Fordyce murmur or complain? How wonderfully she magnified the grace of God! She loved the Savior and always found him a very present help in time of trouble.

The dear one has entered into her rest and her example of patience and gentleness will live after her. The burden of her prayer was that God would bless His church and save all her dear ones, and her friends in His Kingdon of glory.
