Officer George W. Shinault was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.

He was the son of John Shinault and Betty Peaches Shinault, both of Caroline(?) County Virginia.

Circumstance: Officers Shinault and his partner Ralph Edwards of the First Precinct, were operating Scout 11 and had finished an assignment at Union Station Plaza, where they aided James F. Nicholls, a 31 year old Georgetown University professor who had collapsed. They next received a call for a fight at 39 F Street NW. Officer Shinault walked up to the house at 39 F Street and was shot twice in the chest. As Officer Shinault was falling, he warned his partner, who chased the suspect, William Bullock, 33 years old, losing him in an alley. As Officer Shinault lay dying, a citizen robbed him of his revolver. Officer Shinault was taken to Casualty Hospital where he died.

Officer Shinault was well known, having participated as a police officer in the Bonus March earlier that summer. It was during the Bonus March and riots that Officer Shinault, while working with his partner, Officer Miles Znamenacek, shot and killed William J. Hushka of Chicago, Illinois, on July 28, 1932. Mr. Hushka is enrolled in Find-A-Grave, being interred at Arlington National Cemetery, memorial number 49209931, his memorial being established by Mr. John C. Anderson.

Prior to his time as a member of the Metropolitan Police, Officer Shinault had served as a police officer in Richmond City, Virginia.

Officer Shinault was survived by his wife, Helen (nee Williams) and five children, Elrod B, 14 years; George Jr, 12 years; E. Marion 7 years; H. Lee, 4 years, and Odessa, 18 months. His funeral was held at the family home, 1350 Franklin Street NE, with the Reverend O. O. Dietz officiating. Officer Shinault was buried in Richmond City, Virginia.

At the time of his death, Officer Shinault earned $48.00 a week.

After a period of several years, the suspect Willie Bullock was captured in Newark, New Jersey, returned to Washington, DC, and convicted of the murder of Officer Shinault. Mr. Bullock died in 1950. See memorial # 120748784.
