Fath, 84, Springfield, who died 3:45 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 1997, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. The Rev Kenneth Sandlin will be officiant at the service to be held at Patton Memorial Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsboro. Visitation will be at the funeral home the hour prior to the service. Born March 30, 1913 in Fillmore, he was a son of Eugene L. and Matilda M. (Kaburick) Fath. At an early age he moved to the Fath homestead which dates back to October 1864, in East Fork Township southeast of Hillsboro. He lived for a short time in Schererville, IN, moved back to Hillsboro in 1951 and then to Springfield in 1955. He was a union carpenter there and worked for several Springfield area contractors. Projects he worked on included White Oaks Mall, Lincoln Land Community College and Lincoln Towers.

From 1961 to 1982 he and his daughter, Lila Jean, raised and raced harness horses. After his daughter retired in 1982, he continued on his own until 1996. He owned and raised such notable horses as Avalon Kate, Kate's Image and Osage Dan. He was also an avid fisherman.

He married Irene D. Bonan May 9, 1941, in Schererville, IN and she survives along with a daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Lila Jean) Fugate of Springfield; a brother, Melville C. Fath, Westville, IN; two grandchildren and on great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herschel H. Fath.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with service from 1942 to 1943 and member of the Illinois Harness Horse Association, United States Trotting Association and Carpenters Union Local #16, Springfield.

The family suggests memorials to the Heart Association.
