Groton - Irene Pauline Pfaff, 87, of Groton and formerly of Conde, S.D., died peacefully surrounded by her family on April 13, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare in Groton, S.D. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Conde with Reverend Jan Price officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St., Aberdeen. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 4-7 p.m., with a public prayer service held at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour before the service on Monday. Irene Pauline Naasz was born the seventh of 13 children on July 13, 1918, to Adolph and Pauline (Sackman) Naasz on a farm south of Java, S.D. In addition, she had three half-brothers and grew up in a household that would turn out to be all boys. The family moved to Mobridge, S.D., where Irene attended Mobridge public school, graduating in 1938. Irene married Arthur Pfaff of Java, S.D., on May 10, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mobridge. On June 12, Art entered the military and served until 1946. During this time, Irene worked with her brother, Herman, in Idaho. After the war, they lived in Wessington and Miller, where JoEllen was born. In 1950 the family moved to Hosmer, S.D., to operate The Red and White Grocery. While in Hosmer, Julie and Jerel were born. In 1957 the family moved to Conde, where they owned and operated Art's Grocery until their retirement in 1983. After Art passed away in 1994, Irene remained in Conde at the family home they had built and loved. In November 2001, she moved to Rosewood Court in Groton. Irene became a resident of Beverly Healthcare on Jan. 31, 2004, where she continued to reside until the time of her death. Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, doing various types of needlework, crocheting and working in her yard and flower garden. Throughout her life, she had been an active member of the United Methodist Church Women, Living Light Circle, American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens. She is survived by one son, Jerel (Lee Ann) Pfaff, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one daughter, Julie (Dennis) Harry, Mahtomedi, Minn.; one son-in-law, Bruce Herman, Conde, S.D.; four grandchildren, Heather Herman, Tea, S.D., Sonja Herman, Laramie, Wyo., Rebecca Harry, Des Moines, Iowa, David Harry, Mahtomedi, Minn.; and two brothers, Marvin Naasz, Mobridge, S.D., and Rueben Naasz, Olalla, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, JoEllen Herman and 11 siblings. Casket bearers will be Heather Herman, Sonja Herman, Becky Harry, David Harry, Bruce Herman and Rod Fortin.
