Wilhelm Krause had met Mathilde Werner, the German-Russian with the "black eyes", when she was about 12 (almost 13). They had about a twelve-year age difference. He came to America and worked steadily farming in the Beebe Draw area of La Salle, Colorado. For eight years, he worked to earn her passage to America to join him as his bride.
"GREELEY, Colo.. May 13.—For eight years William Krause was worked and saved with but one purpose in mind—to win a farm and a competence and save enough money to pay the passage to America of a black-eyed girl in Odessa. The girl in Odessa was only 13 when he left her, and he has not seen her since, but he remained true to his promise and his dreams were realized last night when, in the presence of the members of the German colony, pretty Matilda Werner, the girl with the black eyes, became his wife. The bride arrived the first of the week, having made the long trip from Odessa alone. Krause owns his own ranch in the Beebe Draw neighborhood."
