After high school, she attended Circleville Bible College in Circleville, Ohio for three years. She graduated from Malone College in Canton, Ohio in August of 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Phyllis received her Master's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Evansville in 1972.
Phyllis began her teaching career at West Terrace in August of 1966. She then transferred to White which closed after two years. She then taught at Lodge for seven years. Phyllis returned to West Terrace when her daughter entered first grade. She remained there for 16 years. Phyllis completed her teaching career at Stringtown. She taught a total of 40 years!
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Christina "Christie" Dawn Hurt (Mark) of Evansville, IN; her step-children, Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Evans of Peoria, AZ, Richard Alan Fitzgerald (Carolyn) of Evansville, IN, Larry Patrick Fitzgerald (Onita) of Evansville, IN. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Isabella Eve, Luke Andrew and Grace Noelle Hurt of Evansville, IN; her step grandchildren, Tammi Lynn Gregg (Randy), Julie Marie Nelson, and Candice Fitzgerald, all of Evansville, IN, Steven Jacob "Jake" Evans of Arizona; step-great grandchildren, Kelsie and Kyla Gregg, Reese and Jordyn Nelson all of Evansville, IN also survive her. One half sister, Jenny Duncan, two half brothers, Jack and Gary (Donna) Hayhurst all of Evansville, IN are survivors as well. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins surviving her. A special cousin, Rose Mary (Rooney) Schmitz (Charles) who was like a sister throughout her entire life.
Phyllis grew up in the Church of Christ in Christian Union on Maryland Street. She started there when she was two weeks old. Phyllis was active in the youth group and was a soloist as well. Phyllis was a member of Forest Hills Wesleyan Church. She headed and served on many committees of the church. She was a member of Evansville Retired Teachers Association; serving as editor of the newsletter. Phyllis was also a member of Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and ADK (Fidelis Gamma Chapter), an honorary international teacher's sorority. Phyllis served on the Advisory Board of Evansville Center for Women's Ministries. For the last several years, she co-chaired the F.J. Reitz Class of 1961 Reunion.
After retiring, she re-dedicated her life to Christ. Phyllis tried earnestly to live by the following, "Live your life in such a way that those who know you, but don't know God, will know God because they know you."
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Patrick "Pat" Fitzgerald in 2010.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, December 8, 2014 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711. Pastor Mike Stoelting will be officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
