The son of Francis & Elizabeth (nee Nary) Null, in 1850 he lived with his family in Heidelberg Township, York County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he presumably was living in Conewago Township, Adams County, but the census for that township disappeared long ago.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 16, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 25 as a private with the 74th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. G, and honorably discharged with his company August 1, 1865.
