Kenneth Scott (Balda) Sims died July 19, 2008, at the Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix at the age of 62. He was born Oct. 3, 1945, in Mount Vernon to Jacob Frank and Clara Mae (Horton) Balda.
Ken’s father Jacob Balda was working as a logger in the Day Creek area of Mount Vernon. He was killed in a logging accident when Ken was 6-years-old. On June 22, 1962, his stepfather Harold Gene Sims legally adopted Ken. The Sims family had left Washington and made Phoenix their home. Ken remained there until his death. Ken worked as a brick mason for much of his life.
Ken was a very kind, giving person and a loving father. He would leave his home in Phoenix to go to Washington to care for Teri while she was in and out of the hospital the last three years. He would take his granddaughter on small trips to see Mount Saint Helens and to cheerleading while Teri was in the hospital, and often went in the morning to have breakfast at Carol’s Corner in Vancouver with his son-in-law Steve. He frequently brought folks who were less fortunate into his life and often into his home. His special friends Rosie Pinto, Dan and Joann Paris will miss him.
Ken is survived by his children: Kenny Sims of Phoenix; Teri Renner and husband Steve, granddaughter Breanna Dolliver of Vancouver, Wash.; Tammy Denman of Fort Worth, Texas, grandchildren April Elman, Matthew Masters, U.S. Army, Iraq, Kaycee Karr, great-grandson Jayden Karr. He is also survived by his loving sister Sharon Bowsher of Phoenix; brothers Larry Sims and Glen Sims of Phoenix and many nieces and nephews in Phoenix: one aunt, Joyce Shaffer of Mount Vernon. Oak Harbor survivors include two aunts, Jo Balda and Elsie Balda and an uncle by marriage, Bud Spafford.
Graveside services for Ken (Balda) Sims will be held Friday, Oct. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at Fircrest Cemetery with Pastor Randy Beumer of the Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor
