Charlie James passed away Wednesday morning at a local hospital shortly following his 86th birthday. Graveside services will be 2:30 P.M. Monday, December 8, 2014 in the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville with Military Honors. Reverend Herbert Williams and Pastor Trey Dickerson will officiate.
Charlie was born in Bibb County and was of the Methodist Faith. With pride and honor, Charlie served in the United States Marine Corps from 1946-1954. After 39 years of service he retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, where he was known as “Jesse”. Following retirement, he worked for Economy Auto Rentals and Butler Lexus. Charlie was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia “Ginny” Christian Bowman; step-father, James Bowman; daughter, Debra Jackson; and granddaughter, Jessica James.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rosa James of Macon; children, Charlie Frank James, Jr. (Arlene) of Marietta, Angela Hartzog (Mike) of Macon, Lynn Leacroy of Macon and Ray Berryhill (Donna) of Jackson; seven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to two charities close to Charlie’s heart- Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia, 774 Hazel Street, Macon, Georgia 31201; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
