Lonnie Verlan Griffith, 86, passed away from cancer on December 2, 2014, in Houston, Texas. Visitation will be at 1 p.m., December 4, with service to follow at 2 p.m., at Lakewood Christian Church. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Lonnie was born in Floydada, Texas, to the late Elige Lema and Olga (Hilbun) Griffith. He attended South Junior High School and graduated from Waco High School in 1948. Lonnie played football on the Waco High School State Championship team of 1945. He married Martha Snider on February 24, 1951. Lonnie served in the Texas National Guard, notably guarding downtown Waco when the tornado of 1953 struck.

He was a 60-year member of the George N. Denton Masonic Lodge. Lonnie worked as a company representative with Wm. Cameron Co. Wholesale Building Materials later known as CertainTeed Corp. He worked with contractors and home builders in and around Waco for 45 years. He was known as the "Dean of Millwork".

Lonnie was a devoted charter member of Lakewood Christian Church. He served many leadership positions, Elder, Deacon, Trustee, and Chairman of the Building Committee.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Griffith; sisters, Mary Griffith Crook and Rita Griffith Snider; and nephew, Donnie Snider.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; son, Richard Griffith and his wife, Debra; daughter, Marcia Morris and her husband, Danny; grandchildren: Christi Griffith Grimes, John Morris, and Marcus "Andy" Morris; great-granddaughter, Evelynn Morris; sister, Amanda Breedlove; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
