Mackey Ervin McCray, "Mack", 81, of Charlotte, N.C. passed away on December 3, 2014 at the Clear Creek Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Mint Hill, N.C.

He was born August 26, 1933 in White Store Township, Anson County, N.C. to the late Sam McCray and the late Lucy Katie Rivers McCray Dutton. His formative years were spent in Marshville, N.C., Cheraw, S.C., Wilmington, N.C. and Charlotte, N.C. In 1952, he married his beloved wife of 55 years, Betty Lois McFadden McCray in Edgemoor, S.C. Mr. McCray was a U.S. Army Veteran who served with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany from 1954-1956. After returning from the Army, he worked for Oakhurst Sales Company in Charlotte. In 1968, he and his wife Betty opened Independence Hardware Inc. on East Independence Boulevard and ran the business until their retirement in 2004. Mr. McCray had been a member of the Matthews Masonic Lodge # 461 for 57 years.

Mack was a loving husband and father. He was a kind, generous man and good friend. He was a hardworking man that always made sure his family were taken care of and was always there lending support. While in business, his customers became friends and over the years Mack became their "Go to Guy". He was always willing to help and to share his knowledge and skill on many subjects. Whether it was plumbing, electrical, looking for that hard to find item or wanting to know how to fix their lawnmower, he always went the extra mile for anyone that needed his help and advice. In his spare time, he loved being on his farm where he enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening, riding his tractors and spending time with his family and friends. He will be profoundly missed by many.

He was predeceased in death by his wife, Betty Lois McFadden McCray; sisters, Agnes Dale McCray Kellerhalls, Betty Jo McCray Barkley; and brother, Ben Frank McCray. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia McCray.
