John was the son of Cruth and Eliza Ann (Haws) Goold. In 1868 his family immigrated to the United States settling in Richland Twp. of Saginaw County Michigan. His father disappeared in the great forest fires of 1871. In 1877 they moved to Lees Corners (Laporte) in Ingersol Twp. Midland County.
He married Rossetta Acker on August 17, 1884. After the death of Rossetta, John married Celia (Gaugier) Acker in 1914. Celia's first husband Jacob was Rossetta's brother.
According to his Death Certificate and obituary John dropped dead of a heart attack while working on the highway installing a road culvert.
