Christian J. Gaston, 90, went to be with his Savior on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Rossiter, Pa., the son of the late Tally and Catherine (Stambler) Gaston.

He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 36th Calvary Mech Squad.

On July 7, 1944, he married Rosemary Flick, who survives.

He was a life member of the Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Punxsutawney, where he served in numerous offices and activities.

He was also a life member of the Central Fire Department in Punxsutawney, having served for 39 years.

He worked with his father in the Punxsy Chevrolet/Chrysler Dealership. After closing the dealership, he worked for the U.S. Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He then worked for the Department of the Army of the United States Government. Afterward, he worked at Ragley's True Value and as a dispatcher for the Punxsutawney Police Department.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Janeen Harris and husband Bob of Northeast, Pa.; and two sons, Christian J. Gaston Jr. of Long Beach, California and Jeffry K. Gaston and fiance Judy Dammon of Sacramento, California.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Carr Jr., Rebecca Lapp, Jared Gaston, Christian Andrew Gaston and Nicole Lundquist; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica Carr, Samantha Carr and Brendon Lapp.

Friends will be received at the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Full military honors by the U.S. Army and the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard will be accorded at the funeral home on Friday evening at 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church in Punxsutawney, with Pastor Richard Keach officiating.

Interment will follow in Circle Hill Cemetery in Punxsutawney.

36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized Activated as the 90th Reconnaissance Squadron on 15 September 1942 organic to 90th Motorized Division and organized from 90th Infantry Division’s old reconnaissance troop. Relieved when division reorganized as infantry division in early 1943, attached to 4th Headquarters Special Troops in June, then to 11th Cavalry Group. Redesignated 36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron 22 December 1943. Arrived in UK 11 October 1944; Le Havre, France, 23 November. Entered line in Roer River sector 13 December. Operated between Ninth Army and British forced during Roer crossing and drive to Rhine beginning 27 February 1945, sent first patrol across Rhine 15 March. Raced across Germany to the Elbe River near Wittenburg by 15 April.
