She was the grand-daughter of Sgt James & Eunice Jackson Hawley. The idea of the Erie Canal was attributed to her brother Jesse Hawley of Lockport, NY. A new book about Eunice, "The Great Divorce," will be released August 2010, by Ilyon Woo. She won the right to her children in 1818, over 100 years before women won the right to vote.

[Add a third child of Eunice: Susan M Chapman, born Sept. 1, 1806. She married Volney Green in April 1828. She died January 11, 1831, leaving an infant son, born January 1831 who died a few days after birth without name.
