Robert C. Jones, 92, of Drums passed away Sunday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2014, at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, Drums, where he had been a resident for the past five-and-a-half years.

Born in Slocum on March 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Ethel A. (Meyers) Jones. Prior to residing at Fritzingertown, he had lived in Pine Grove for a short time and had previously resided in Maryland and Michigan.

He was a 1939 graduate of Newport Township High School. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. He served as a pilot, flying A-20, A-26, and B-25 light combat bombers over Germany, and was also an Air Force Instructor Pilot. After leaving the service in 1945, he attended Penn State University, graduating with a degree in industrial engineering in 1950.

He worked as an industrial and mechanical engineer for Sylvania Electric Products, Mill Hall; Harrington Tool Company, Ludington, Mich.; and later as a civilian contractor for the U.S. Air Force at Olmsted Air Force Base, Harrisburg, until its closing. He then went on to work at a few other Air Force bases and for the federal government in the Philadelphia area until his retirement.

He was an avid aviator throughout his life, having held his commercial pilot certificate, and owned a single-engine Piper Cub with his brother, Charles. He was a member of American Legion Post 172, Lanham, Md.; and Elks Lodge 736, Ludington, Mich. He was also an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, the former Margaret Jacob, who passed away in 1991; four sisters: Dorothy Arnold, Marjorie Harrington, Marion Shelhamer and Shirley Shelhamer, and a brother, Walter Jones.

Surviving are two sisters: Mildred Marchetti, Drums, and Dolores Rinehimer, Slocum; a brother: Charles F. Jones and his wife Loretta, Slocum, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at noon from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
