The King family moved from Home City, Kansas, to Roseburg, Oregon, when Maxine was a young girl. Maxine graduated from Roseburg High School. After high school Maxine worked in the Portland, Oregon, shipyards as a “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII. After she married Albert Hammond she was his bookkeeper at the Union 76 service station for many years. Maxine was very prolific in letter writing, reading, crosswords, and caring for her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly Hammond of Sydney, Australia; son, Monte F. Hammond and his wife Sharon “Sam” of San Francisco, California; brother, James L. King of Aiea, Hawaii; Ian Hammond and his wife, Julie, of Roseburg; Joshua Hammond of Reno; and great-grandchildren Frank Hill, Ashley Figueroa, Monte Hammond Jr. and Monica Hammond. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Albert; her sister, Evelyn Hunter-Kellogg; and a brother, Jack King.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 4 p.m. in the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Pastor Randy Chitwood will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions in Maxine’s name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to thank grandson and granddaughter Ian and Julie Hammond and the wonderful staff at Brookdale Memory Care for their wonderful care of Maxine. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in charge of arrangements.
