Alvy Leslie Dickey

Alva was the son of Robert James Dickey and Julia Ann (Barnes) Dickey, born November 10, 1893, near Hannon, MO. He grew up and lived around the Liberal area most of his life.

He served his country in WW I and was stationed in Siberia. Upon returning to Liberal, he met and married Ruth Pearl Barcroft, daughter of Ellis Manuel Barcroft and Martha Ann (Carpenter) Barcroft, October 23, 1921 in Liberal. They were blessed with five children: Arthur Leslie Dickey, born July 21, 1922; Donald Eugene Dickey, born August 30, 1923; Ruth Pearl Dickey, born February 25, 1926; James Lester Dickey, born April 2, 1927 and Mable Elizabeth 'Betty' Dickey, born July 2, 1930.

Two children preceded him in death. Ruth Pearl, on June 8, 1926 and Donald Eugene, on October 18, 1933.

Alva worked for the Cherokee Coal Company from 1921 until 1927, the Minden Coal Company from 1927 until 1930 and for broom factories from 1930 until 1936. In 1936 the family moved to Sapulpa, OK, where he was employed by a glass factory. They were living in Sapulpa, OK when he suffered a stroke and passed away June 2, 1937 at the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee, OK. He is buried at Shiloh Cemetery, northwest of Liberal in Barton County, MO. The family moved back to Liberal, MO, where his widow lived for several years. Their son, Arthur, passed away October 21, 1969 in the Veterans Hospital in Fayetteville, AR. James passed away February 18, 1981 in the Veterans Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Their daughter, Betty, married David Courtney in 1946 and moved to Kansas City, MO.
