STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Staten Islander Alexander J. Van Wart, 91, of New Dorp, a machinist who was remembered as a devoted husband and father, died Nov. 2 in New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton.
Born in Mansfield, Mass., he was brought to New Dorp with his family as a child. Mr. Van Wart attended high school on Staten Island and worked as a machinist for the U.S. Metallic Packing Corp. He retired in 1978.
Two years after his retirement, he moved with his wife of over 60 years, the former Lillian F. Stanton, to Tobyhanna, Pa. The couple returned to New Dorp in 1996.
In his leisure, he enjoyed building model steam and jet engines and traveling to steam engine exhibitions.
Mr. Van Wart attended services at New Dorp Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Lillian, and his son, Phillip, he is survived by two more sons, Robert and Ronald; his daughter, Betty Lenning; eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. Burial followed in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
