John Alden Glick, 74, of Columbus, formerly of Hope, passed at 1pm Thursday, November 27, 2014 in Columbus.
John Alden Glick, born February 26, 1940 in Columbus, the son of Homer A. and Nena Marie (Thayer) Glick. He attended elementary school at both St. Louis Crossing and Clifford, transferring to Hope High School his sophomore year. He loved competitive sports and participated in track, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the first graduating class of Hauser High school in 1958. Two weeks after graduation John enlisted in the US Army, and after basic training and Army Tank training at Ft. Knox, KY, he was sent to Fulda, Germany where he was stationed for 2 years.
His duty while there was to guard the Iron Curtain as part of the 7th Army, 14th Regiment, and 3rd Battalion. John played basketball for the company team where he had the opportunity to play on a regimental team in a tourney in Berlin. John earned several awards for expert marksmanship at the battalion level.
While on furlough he returned to Hope, and married Elizabeth Jean Flora on December 27, 1959. He returned to Germany and he made it back to Hope, in September 1960 for the birth of his daughter Kathryn Sue, and then was stationed at Ft. Devens, MA until May 31, 1960. After his discharge and return to Hope, he worked in construction, and later started his own business building homes, and later started another business in agricultural drainage until 1972. He and Jean also welcomed two more children, Kimberly Tara, September 20, 1961, and Kerry Dean, November 19, 1962.
John contributed to the community by serving on the Flat Rock- Hawcreek School Board for 8 years, President of Hope Volunteer Fire Dept., President of Hope PTO, and President of Hope Town Council more than 7 years. He was also a precinct committeeman for 25 years. John had been Manager of Hope Utilities and facilitated computerizing the payment of utility bills and installation of the town's electronic read water meters.
John loved farming and was able to do this from 1972 until he retired in 2008. John once said, "I saw sights in nature--a tree leafed out in a short time while I planted corn; making beautiful pictures of landscape, sky and lighting. If put to canvas, they would be masterpieces, and only God could show me those things."
John competed nationally as a professional duplicate bridge player and was certified as a Gold Life Master with over 3000 points by the American Contract Bridge League. John was known to be a very unique person and was named as America's Number 1 Country Character by Country Magazine in 1991. John was a member of Hope Moravian Church and had served as Associate Trustee and Sunday school teacher.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean, children Kathryn (Michael) Hayes of Indianapolis, Kimberly Glick of Columbus, daughter-in-law Julie (Pete) Begin of Columbus; a brother George (Barbara) Glick of Columbus; grandchildren Kira (Tanner) Smith of Santa Monica, CA, Stephanie (Tim) Lee of Cartersville, GA, Ryan (Jaclyn) Ferguson of Evansville, Robyn Ferguson, Indianapolis, Cameron Glick, Los Angeles, CA, Luke (Billie) Erb of Edinburgh and Lance (Jenny) Erb of Columbus; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Kerry Dean Glick in 2004.
The funeral will be conducted at 10:30am Monday at Hope Moravian Church with Dr. John Gilliland, Pastor Andy Kilps and Pastor Luke Erb officiating.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 6pm Sunday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and 9:30am to time of service Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
