He was raised and educated in Santa Maria, graduating from Santa Maria High School in 1958. In that same year, at the age of 17, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Cincinnati Redlegs and spent the next five seasons playing ball in the Reds organization. He married Anna Mae Barca on Feb. 1, 1959, and after he concluded his baseball career in 1962, they returned to Santa Maria. Dick was a truck driver for 38 years, spending 26 of those years with Smith Transportation of Santa Maria, as well as several years with Best Delivery and John R. Lawson.
While he was working, he was also deeply involved in youth sports 7 particularly girls/ softball 7 serving as a longtime coach for the Orcutt Express. Over the years, he also gave hitting lessons to many young ballplayers in the Santa Maria Valley.
Dick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anna Mae Beall, of Orcutt; daughter, Teresa Beall, of Paradise, Calif.; daughter, Andrea Moriarty of Pasadena, Calif.; and sister, Rebecca Sylvester of Santa Maria.
He was preceded in death by his father, Berol "Kansas" Beall, in 1993, his mother, Mildred, in 1999, and an infant sister, Dixie Gay, in 1939.
A rosary will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary. Father Anthony Runtz of St. Louis de Montfort will officiate. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church with Father Ed Jalbert officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or a charity of one/s choice.
