Baseball Player. Burlin White was a durable, exceptional catcher for at least eight Negro League teams between 1915 and 1935. He then managed the Boston Colored Giants and Boston Royal Giants into the 1940s and his good friend, Will "Cannonball" Jackman, was the main hurler. The "Old Battery" of White and Jackman played to adoring fans on May 25, 1945 at Braves Field. Each over 50, Jackman lost 3 to 1 to a younger team but made a fine showing with White for a Roxbury church charity fund. White served in WWI (1918) and was married for a short time to Madeline L. (1925). They lived in Medford in the 1930s. White and Jackman's wife (Louise) died a week apart in 1971, Jackman passed in September 1972. Jackman is six miles away in Mount Hope Cemetery, West Roxbury. Though he died in Belmont, White lived in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood for many years. Burlin was one of nine children of John C. and May White of Richmond, Indiana. His father died at the turn of the century leaving the large family in poverty. Burlin's birth is listed as September 1894 in the 1900 Census, but everywhere else is February 5, 1895.
