Her first husband was Peter John Buwalda (Nov. 28, 1923 - March 27, 1965), son of famed structural geologist John Peter Buwalda, the first chairman of Caltech's Geology Division and Imra Wann Buwalda, one of the first policewomen in the city of Washington, DC. They married on June 24, 1950 in Las Angeles, CA.
