Harry was born in St. Louis to Asa A. and Mary Jane Brookings Wallace. His parents settled in St. Louis in 1851.
After completing his education at Smith Academy which was in St. Louis he went on to Yale University to graduate with degree of Bachelor of Arts. After several years working for Cupples Company he was promoted to president of Cupples in 1918.
He accepted the position of Assistant Director General of Military Relieve of the American Red Cross during the World War. Later he became Deputy Commissioner of the American Red Cross in France.
He served St. Louis and assisted in raising two million dollars for charities. He was member of the City Plan Commission for two years, president of the Mercantile Library Association for one year and general chairman of the Community Fund of St. Louis in 1924. For three years he served on the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Commerce and in 1927 was director of the State National Bank and of the Corporation of the Washington University.
On October 19, 1902 he married Mary R. Kennard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel M. Kennard. He and Mary had two children, John Kennard Wallace and Anne Kennard Wallace.
It is recorded in the Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy that Harry's great-great-grandfather, David Wallace, received an original land grant from William Penn. The line is brought down through Benjamin Wallace, David M. Wallace, Asas Wallace and Harry.
