Dolores Belle Cox Smithson, 79, of St. Albans, died on Jan. 26, 2005, at Sunbridge Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born and raised in Ward, she was the 1943 class valedictorian of East Bank High School and a former teletype operator for Western Union in Charleston. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Smithson Sr.; brother, Gary Cox of Fairplain, W.Va.; and sisters, Marjorie Boyd of Glen Ferris, W.Va., and Zella Hagar of Springfield, Ohio. She lovingly raised her three children, John Smithson Jr. of Charleston, Mark Smithson of Cross Lanes, and Linda Smithson of Parkersburg, W.Va. She was preceded in death by brothers, Vivian Cox of Boston, Mass., Vernon Cox of St. Paul, Minn., Carl Cox of Browns Mill, N.J.; and sisters, Stella Fizer of Quincy and Edythe Sizemore of Oak Hill, W.Va. She will be sadly missed by grandkids, Mike Smithson, Lisa Gray, Jason Smithson; and great-grandkids, Christopher Byrd, Lyndsey Gray and Katie Gray of South Charleston.
