OBITUARY OF SHAREN CHRISTENSEN

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Sharen Phelps CHRISTENSEN, wife of Chesley CHRISTENSEN, Mayor of Mount Pleasant, born January 22, 1932 in Castle Gate, Utah, the oldest of four daughters of John PHELPS and Carol HYSLOP, died at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center on August 01, 1997 of complications from pneumonia, surrounded by her family.

At the age of 11, Sharen contracted polio just after her father died. She received treatment in a hospital in Seattle, Washington made possible through the March of Dimes. She was told by her doctor that she would probably never walk, but her determination and the Sister Kenny treatment she received proved him wrong. This determination showed throughout her life, in every task that she undertook.

She married Chesley R. CHRISTENSEN of Mount Pleasant and had a very good marriage of some 48 years. She was the mother of three children, Kathy PARASKEVA of Salt Lake City, John (Julie) of Mayfield, and Chesley Lynn of Mount Pleasant. She had ten grandchildren, two foster grandchildren, and seven foster-great-grandchildren.

Sharon attended school in Kenilworth, Utah; Seattle, Washington; and Ephraim, Utah, graduating from high school at Snow College in May of 1949. After her marriage on May 28, 1949, they lived in Provo for a while and then went to Fort Hood, Texas when the National Guard was activated for the Korean War. She had her first child while living at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, returning to live in Ephraim while Chesley was in Korea. When he returned to the states, they lived in Payson for four years.

After moving back to Mount Pleasant in 1957, Sharen was active in community affairs, serving as president of the JayCeeEtts and helping with other civic organizations. She loved bowling and bowled in leagues for more than 15 years. She worked as a sewing machine operator for Osborne Apparel for several years and later worked at the DariFrez in Mount Pleasant, Top Stop and then went to work for Dove's Market when it opened. She worked as a checker for Doves, and then for Terrels when he was on main street and when he moved out to the location at the south end of town. She loved everyone, but especially her grandchildren.

Sharen was preceded in death by her father and mother and a sister, Jill WESTLUND. She is survived by her husband and children, sisters, Jane PAINTER of Salt Lake, Jackie LUND of Duchesne, Barbara (Fred) ROSQUIST of Redmond, and brothers, Garth Edward (Jeanine) THOMSON of Huntington, and Gregory (Kristin) THOMSON of Ephraim.
