An Australian Test cricketer. As a player in the first Test match ever it is inevitable that he could collect a series of firsts, and he did not waste the opportunity. He faced the first ball, he scored the first century, and his final score of 165 not out (he retired hurt) out of the total Australian score of 245 remains the highest percentage scored by a single batsman in a completed innings. When he toured England in 1878 he was the first Australian to score a century in that country. He only played in 3 Tests but he later umpired a further 12, two of which his brother Alick was playing in.
