Bernadine Maxine Finnegan, 90, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, IA surrounded by family.
Bernadine and her identical twin sister, Bernadette, were born June 27, 1924 in rural Ponca to Tom and Nora (Sullivan) Shanahan. Bernadine graduated from Ponca High School in 1942 and then attended Wayne State College, where she earned her teaching degree. She taught in the rural Ponca area until Bernadine met Raymond Finnegan. This Irish couple was joined in matrimony in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca on June 29, 1948. They were blessed with seven children. Together they farmed and raised cattle, chickens, and pigs in rural Newcastle. Bernadine loved farm life and all that it entailed. Her two greatest joys were being a farmer’s wife and raising her family. In 1991, Ray and Bernadine built a home on the edge of the original Finnegan farm. Traveling and family time filled their days together for many years.
Bernadine was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Newcastle. Raymond became ill in 2009 and at that time Bernadine moved in with her sister Bernadette Day in Newcastle. At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law in Vermillion.
Survivors include her children, Martin Finnegan and his wife Donna of Vermillion, SD, Marilyn Foster and her husband Larry of South Sioux City, NE, Patsy O’Neal and her husband Steve of Vermillion, SD, Deanna Nelson and her husband Gregory of Ponca, NE, Dan Finnegan and his wife Cindy of Cozad, NE, Bob Finnegan and his wife Michelle of Newcastle, Ron Finnegan and his wife Carol of Newcastle, NE, sisters Bernadette Day of Newcastle and Monica Richards of Ponca, sister-in-law Shirley Shanahan of Ventura, CA, twenty-five grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 2013, her parents, one brother, Mike Shanahan, and one grandson, Eric Cook.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
