Nancy Jane Erwin Stewart Douglas

Nancy DOUGLAS was born to Laban and Nancy STEWART in Polk County Missouri on 12 December 1849, although her tombstone says 1848. She married Jesse H. DOUGLAS in Austin Texas on 12 November 1865. Jesse was born in Murfreesboro Tennessee ca. 1825, and was about 23 years older than Nancy, who was his third wife.

From contributor Ann:
"He married Nancy's older sister Eliza Ann Stewart 27 Nov 1859 Ellis County TX. They are in Ellis Country in 1860..
She died.
He married Evaline Gail Manly 23 June 1863. Evaline died after birth of daughter Sarah. He married Nancy 12 Nov 1865.

After Ann Eliza Stewart Douglas died, Jesse married Evaline Gail Manly, who, in 1864, gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Gail Douglas. However Evaline Gail Douglas died shortly after giving birth to her baby and her husband, Jesse, having no way to care for the infant, told his mother to take the baby home with her and give her to his sisters, Lizzie and Sue. Since Sue already had several children of her own, Lizzie, who never married, took Sarah and raised her. ( I followed this through the census) Although Lizzie never legally adopted Sarah, Lizzie always regarded her as her own child and when Lizzie died left her property to Sarah. Jesse however was concerned for her welfare.

Paraphrased from "Sylvana' written by Elmo Douglas Headrick: "Jesse Douglas, while never having any part in raising his oldest daughter, Sarah, was always interested in her welfare and at one time bought 320 acres of land for Sarah. For this, he traded his noble animal, Nelly Capshaw. This fine blooded saddle mare had, in 1869, more corresponding value than the finest automobile today."
(Also from a letter from Jesse to his brother George Douglas telling about his buying this property.) " George, it is out of the question for me to move during Old Lady Stewart's lifetime. I think she would go crazy. She is old and frail in body and mind, but she may live longer than younger ones. I am not sure whether I will remain on this place next year or not -- a couple of months will decide that. PS. Eli weighs 32 lbs.-Earl is growing fine, stands his weight. Can almost sit alone." (Old lady Stewart may refer to Jesse's third wife Nancy Stewart.)"

Jesse's first wife, Evaline Gail Manly (born in Tennessee 2 August 1846) died 23 April 1864, due to childbirth complications with their daughter Sarah Gail DOUGLAS (1864-1937). Jesse joined the Confederacy as a Drummer, 43rd Infantry Regiment, Company C, which saw action at Murfreesboro TN (31 Dec 1862) and Vicksburg (4 July 1863), among others. Jesse DOUGLAS died in Erath County Texas in 1886, and is buried in Turnbow Cemetery, Stephenville, Erath County Texas. Nancy lived 58 more years before passing away at the Confederate Women's Home in Austin Texas on 16 July 1944, at the age of 91.

Known children of Jesse and Nancy Erwin (STEWART) DOUGLAS:

i. Elias "Eli" DOUGLAS, born in Texas ca. 1867, appears to have died 1870-1880; is not with the family in the 1880 Erath County Texas census.

ii. Earl Stewart DOUGLAS, born in Texas 2 August 1869. Earl died in Comanche County Texas 12 January 1944 and is buried in Oddfellows Cemetery, Hamilton County Texas.

iii. Ora M. DOUGLAS, born in Texas 8 February 1876. Ora married William Lucius ("Dude") FISHER in Hamilton County Texas 11 October 1896. Ora died of Scarlet Fever 1 October 1898, while pregnant with their first child. It appears likely that Ora is buried in Carlton Cemetery, Hamilton County Texas, as that is where William is buried.

iv. George G. DOUGLAS, born in Texas ca. 1879. No further info.

v. Jesse H. DOUGLAS Jr, born in Texas March 1881, married Mattie GOAR 1910 Hamilton County Texas. No further info.
