Margaret Gaspard Hendon Oubre, age 80 of Port Arthur, TX passed away on November 25, 2014 at Houston Hospice with her family at her side. She bravely fought cancer for over 33 years.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 28th, from 5PM to 8PM with a rosary to be prayed at 7 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Port Arthur, with Fr. Kevin Badeaux officiating at 10 AM on Saturday, November 29th. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Port Arthur.
Margaret was born September 8, 1934 in Abbeville, Louisiana to the late Clerphe & Maggie Gaspard. She moved to Port Arthur as a young child and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1952, the same year she married her first husband, the late Reginald 'Shorty' Hendon. During their 26 year marriage they were blessed with 5 children. After his death, she then married Ora Oubre, her husband of 34 years.
Margaret worked at J C Penney for several years as a bookkeeper and then went on to co-own Hendon's Gulf Service Station on 32nd St. and Hendon's Robo Car Wash on 9th Ave, in Port Arthur until the early 80s at which time she retired. She was a wonderful homemaker and had the gift of hospitality. Her home was always open to family and friends. Several of her nieces and nephews came to live with her at different times over the years.
A weekly prayer and Bible study group called "The Deeper Life" met in Margaret's home for over 20 years. Her prayer group friends were very special to her and she loved them dearly. She was most proud of the fact that even though times were difficult financially, she was able to put her 5 children through 13 years of Catholic School and was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Port Arthur for over 50 years. The greatest loss in her life was the death of her first child, Gene in 1972.
Margaret was a wonderful friend, mother and grandmother. The family has many wonderful memories of times shared together around her kitchen table playing cards or dominoes, trips to the beach or sharing memorable holidays with friends and extended family. She was the backbone and glue that held her family together and will be greatly missed!
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Lonnie, Elwood and Roy Gaspard; 4 sisters, Wilda Landry , Ora Mae Toups, Alice Faulk, and Virginia Taylor; and her oldest son, Gene Warren Hendon.
She is survived by her husband Ora Oubre; her children Kirk Hendon and wife Kathy of Groves; Suzanne Young and husband David of Houston, Tim Hendon and Amy of Austin, Raymond Shawn Hendon and partner, Keith Napolitano of Meraux, LA; step children, Terry Oubre of Austin and Tracy Oubre of Houston. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren; Gregory Hendon, Troy Hendon, Matthew Hendon, Adam Young, Alex Young, Madelyn Hendon, Mia Hendon, Amanda Hendon, Logan Hendon, Mason Hendon and Cade Oubre. She is also survived by her brother, Barney Gaspard and wife Sandra of Kountze, her sister, Velma Borel and husband Earl of Vidor; along with 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and her precious dog, Princess.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Gregory Hendon, Troy Hendon, Matthew Hendon, Adam Young, Alex Young, Logan Hendon, Mason Hendon and Kade Oubre.
The family would like to thank the many friends and family who have supported them during Margaret's illness, especially: Dr. Alan Kaplan of Houston, Dr. Scott McKenney of Beaumont, the nurses on 6th Floor Main of Methodist Hospital Houston and Houston Hospice.
