Jeanne was born May 8, 1917, in Moorhead, Minn., the daughter of Paul and Cora Christopherson Verne. She attended North Dakota State and graduated from Iowa State University in 1939. She married Robert L. Blahnik on June 28, 1941. She worked as a home demonstration agent in Iowa for the Extension Service and during World War II as an artist for the Army in Washington, D.C., and San Antonio, Texas. After her husband returned from serving overseas for four years as an Army officer, they settled in Cedar Rapids, where she had lived ever since.

Because of her great love for people and her desire to do her part in bettering our world, she was involved in many service organizations, which included: Community Services board member, Jane Boyd Community House, PTA, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, Camp Fire, PEO Chapter JI, Ambrose Art Center, Gamma Phi Beta sorority and president of the ISU Home Economics Alumni Association.

Due to her tremendous love of God's creation, she dedicated much of her time to the Cedar Rapids Garden Club and Indian Creek Nature Center, where an annual speakership is sponsored in her name. Iowa State University honored Jeanne in 1973 with the Helen LeBaron Hilton home economics award. In 1994, she was inducted into the Plaza of Heroines at the Carrie Chapman Catt Hall on the ISU campus. In 1996, an annual ISU scholarship was established in her name.

Her artistry, wit, love of nature, deep sensitivity to others and dedication to family weave a lovely tapestry that will forever adorn our lives.
