Sonja C. Johnson, 76, of Rockford passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014, surrounded by her family. Born August 19, 1938, in St. Louis, MO; she was the daughter of Ruth Evola. She married Gene Johnson on September 22, 1956, in St. Louis. She was employed with the Rockford Park District for more than 42 years. An avid Chicago Bears fan, Sonja enjoyed spending her time attending sports events with her children and grandchildren, jigsaw puzzles, board games, breakfast and dinner with friends, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Gene Johnson; children, Renee Cheek (Don Beinborn), Kevin (Marie), and Todd (Christina) Johnson; grandchildren, David (Allison) and Mike (Julia Paun) Cheek, Brock, Bret, Aidan, and Oliver Johnson; great-granddaughter, Macy Cheek; sister-in-law, Carol Crosno; nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was predeceased by her mother; brothers, Jack and Gene Woelfel; sister, Merle Vogelgesang; and a brother-in-law, Earl Johnson.

Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, November 28th, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park; Pastor Wendell Maynard officiating. Visitation 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Entombment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
