WANCHESE - Leon Richard Howard, Sr. 82, of Wanchese, died Monday, October 21, 2013, in his residence. Mr. Howard was born in Chatham County, Georgia and served his country honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard. After retirement he was employed with Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 15 years and NAVSEACENLANT for 10 years. He also was a parishioner of Saint Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church.
Mr. Howard was predeceased by his father and mother Matthew and Ruby Howard and his wife Margaret Boyd Howard.
Surviving are four sons, Leon R. Howard, Jr., John M. Howard, Robert L. Howard, and Joseph C. Howard; sister Annette H. Fisher; four grandchildren, Sean M. Howard, Derek A. Howard, Jeanne M. Roundtree, and Susan E. Howard.
A celebration of life was held at Saint Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, Saturday, October 26, at 11 a.m. by Father Philip Glick. Burial was held at Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Portsmouth, VA at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
