DORIS S WILLIAMS

Doris Steen Williams of Tryon, NC, formerly of Southold, died at her home Jan 7, 1998, after a long illness. Born in New York City on May 14, 1914, she was the daughter of Mary Jane Devers and Robert John Steen, and the beloved stepdaughter of Albert John Edwards. She was a graduate of Hunter High School and Hunter College in New York City. A retired broadcast executive, Mrs Williams was in the employ of NBC for 43 years, holding among other positions that of contractor administrator for the network and co-founder and manager of both the network Standards and Practices, and Compliance and Practices. Mrs Williams often joked that when she moved from one position to another, she was always replaced by two men. However when she finally retired she felt she had made great progress in the area of women’s rights, being replaced that final time by not only two men, but two women as well. She was a member of the Broadcast Pioneers, and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Doris Williams served on the board of Incarnation Camp in Connecticut for many years, as well as being a member of the Episcopal Church Women, and chairwoman of many parochial events.

Mrs Williams is survived by her husband of 61 yrs, David R Williams of Tryon; a daughter, best-selling novelist Bertrice Small of Southold, NY; a grandson and a great-grandson, Thomas and Chandler Small of Winston-Salem, NC. Cremation, and burial at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY will be private. A memorial service at Holy Trinity Church, Greenport, is planned, and will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations to Camp de Wolfe, care of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, Garden City, NY, will be appreciated.
